Haslop Reserve Walking + Cycling Improvements

Unley Council is proposing to improve walking and cycling safety and amenity to Haslop Reserve on the Rugby-Porter Bikeway. It's the park that's next to Unley Primary School!

The proposed improvements widen the path and simplify the fencing to make it feel less like you're walking or cycling through a cattle run. There's also plentiful new planting, safety treatments to each end of the reserve to slow down car traffic, and even a welcome extension to the reserve itself!

Unley Road Speed Limit Reduction

The State Government has given the green light for the speed limit on Unley Rd to be reduced to 50km/hr. Unley Council had passed a motion in support of this change in December last year, and the new limit will apply to a 1.5km stretch of Unley Rd between Greenhill Rd and Wattle St.

Reducing speed limits on our main roads makes them safer and more pleasant for people outside of cars. In this case, that means people who shop, dine, attend school and, increasingly, live along this special place in the heart of the City of Unley.

50km/hr really isn't low enough to promote the vibrant, people-friendly atmosphere we know Unley Rd deserves, as UniSA Senior Lecturer Dr Andrew Allan explains in this InDaily article on the change. However, combined with the streetscape improvements council has planned for the near future (see below), we could be witnessing the start of a new era for Unley Rd. Here is hoping!

What's coming in 2024-2025?

Unley BUG has combed through the council's proposed budget for financial year 2024-2025 and are thrilled to say that we have found not one, not two, but SIXTEEN walking and cycling related projects proposed to be funded for construction, design or consultation in the next year! Check them out below:

Social Rides

Our popular social ride programs continue to great success. We started them with the aim of providing a safe, comfortable occasion for people to get together and go for a ride. What we are thrilled about is that we have begun to build a community of people who cycle both in Unley and from further afield.

As a reminder, the rides we run are:

Weekly social rides on Tuesdays, departing 9:30am from the Unley Community Centre.

Monthly Coffee Outside rides on the first Saturday of every month, departing 9am from the Unley Town Hall Carpark. Bring coffee and a willingness to chat! The next ride is July 6.

Quarterly Adventure Rides for those who like to get their tyres dirty. These are held on a Saturday, with the next ride being on June 22.

Anyone is welcome!
