Unley Bicycle User Group
Cycling is our preferred method of commuting and a significant part of our recreation.
We appreciate the excellent cycle routes in Unley and surrounding suburbs.
As we live adjacent to the Culvert/Charles walk shared path, we are able to access the Unley cycle routes from our back door. As many of our friends and family live in the Unley/Mitcham area and most of our shopping is local, cycling is our preferred means of transport.
Since the Frome St bicycle route was developed, we have increased our number of visits to the city significantly, accessing via Porter St and the parklands trail.. This includes attending Adelaide Oval, the Museum, Art Gallery, lectures and the theatre. Prior to the bikeway we rarely visited the city for shopping or recreation.
We regularly use the Mike Turtur cycle route to access the coast from Brighton to Outer Harbour using the other excellent cycle ways to return home.
Other areas we visit for recreation are Brownhill Creek, the parklands and playgrounds with the grandchildren.
Cycling is always part of our travel plans. We have attended several Bike SA annual tours and have cycled independently on holidays throughout Australia. In fact on a cruise to New Zealand, every day was a cycle on their network of cycling trails from each port.
We returned to cycling after many years off the bike in our mid- fifties, inspired by watching people as old as us on the Tour Down Under community ride. We did a course to familiarize ourselves with safe techniques to cycle in urban areas with Bike SA and attended their weekend rides to increase our fitness and skills. After about six months we became hooked on the activity and cycling became a high priority.
We would recommend that anyone from the district whose bike skills are rusty, join the Unley BUG heritage or Tuesday rides to build up confidence.
