"...if you can cycle instead of drive somewhere, why not?"

Jessie

What got you into cycling?

My now husband was an avid ‘fixed gear’ cyclist when we met and he showed me how much fun it is to get around by bike. I then started riding an old steel clunker and started commuting from Wayville to work.

What does cycling mean to you?

Cycling is fun. I don’t see it as ‘exercise’ but it’s definitely better than nothing and if you can cycle instead of drive somewhere, why not? It also appeals to my frugal sensibilities and so I love the fact that it costs me absolutely nothing to get somewhere (especially as I charge my e-bike in solar hours).

I feel strongly that cycling is a perfect solution to our city’s current transport issues of congestion and carbon emissions. Of course not everyone can cycle for reasons of disability or their job requirements but if enough people who can cycle do, we will solve the problem because the number of cars left will be manageable and hopefully soon they will be electric.

Tell us about your bike; What do you like most about it?

My bikes are a black Chapelli (manual) road bike that I bought in Melbourne with a baby seat attachment currently and a red Tern e-bike which is a long tail that fits both my kids on the back. I just love how easy the Tern makes cycling with a load on the back. I can arrive at work without having broken a sweat.

Any advice to people wanting to get into cycling?

My advice is to get a bike and meet up with other people who like cycling. Make sure your bike feels good for your body and get a good lock. Keep bikes inside if there is no secure outside area. Even locked up outside bikes are relatively easily stolen by thieves overnight if they can get in the property.
